The Essential Guide to Internet & Software for First-Time Computer Users

The Essential Guide to Internet & Software for First-Time Computer Users

teaching computer to momYou bought a brand new laptop computer for mom - the Apple Macbook was too expensive so you settled for a Dell machine loaded with Windows Vista and a trial copy of Office 2007.

Your mom is a great self-learner and knows all the basic stuff about computers but needs some help is in finding the right software tools that will help her do stuff more efficiently and as inexpensively as possible.

Letter to Mom suggesting tools and web apps for her new computer

Dear Mom - I hope you are enjoying the new Dell notebook. Now the first thing I want you to do is install PC Decrapifier - this will detect and remove all the unwanted trial programs that came pre-installed with your machine.

Next you should install Firefox - it’s an Internet Explorer like web browser but slightly better. Instead of using browser bookmarks, try the delicious add-on to save the addresses of all your favorite websites. Another add-on that you should install is Iterasi - web pages come and go but Iterasi will permanently archive your favorite web pages (like that eggless cake recipe).

You should create two email accounts one Gmail.com - share the primary email address with your friends and family but for everything else (like the newsletter and shopping deal alerts) always use the secondary email address. If you come across a site that requires registration, generate a temporary email address from 10MinuteMail.com and enter without sharing your main email.

With so many websites around, you’ll soon find it very hard to remember all those passwords so get into the habit of putting down all the different passwords into KeepPass from day one.

If you plan to carry this laptop in public places (like the Library), get this Laptop Alarm software that will emit a loud sound if someone tries to shut down your computer or remove the power cable. Laptop thefts are not so uncommon after all.

The trial version of Microsoft Office on your computer will expire after 60 days so you may completely uninstall that software and switch over to Google Docs - it has all the basic feature you would need in an Office suite including templates for tracking expenses and utility bills. You can use your primary Gmail address to log into Google Docs.

Sometimes your friends will send you documents, images or video clips that won’t open on your computer - that’s because you don’t have the right viewer software on your machine. You can simply go to zamzar.com and convert the file into some simple format (like avi for video, jpg for images, doc for documents, mp3 for songs, etc.) that you computer can play/open.

If the computer contains too many programs that you’ll rarely or never use, get the Revo Uninstaller to get rid of such programs permanently. To free up additional space on the hard drive, use WinDirStat to learn about file folders that are occupying the maximum space on your computer and delete the unnecessary files.

Be very careful when deleting files on your computer but if you ever delete something important accidently, Recuva may help you recover all those erased files. It even works with the memory card of your digital camera.

To download pictures from your digital camera onto the computer, get Windows Live Photo Gallery. This software can also upload your photos to our common family Flickr account so everyone gets to see your pictures even though we are several hundred miles away from you.

If the computer is not able to play your huge collection of DVD movies, you’re probably missing some codecs (don’t worry about the term) -  just download the VLC player and the DVDs will play just fine.

You should also get Live Mesh - it will allow us to share files and documents with each other privately plus you can use Mesh to backup important files onto the cloud (I mean the web).

I am almost always available for chat on Google Talk but if some of your online friends use other chat software (like Yahoo! Messenger or AOL), you can easily connect with them through Miranda or, if you don’t want to install any software, use Meebo.

Another thing - do open an account at PayPal and link it to your main credit card as this will make online shopping easier. If you ever have a problem with PayPal or something isn’t clear, just call their toll-free 1-800 support number from your browser using Gizmo.

If your current voice plan is too expensive, I suggest that you download Skype - it lets you make calls from the computer to any landline or mobile phone at much cheaper rates. We can also use Skype to have video chats on weekends but if you don’t find me online, just send me a video email with Eyejot.

If you have newspaper clippings, bill receipts and business cards lying in the closet, just take a picture of them separately using the camera of your mobile phone and transfer them to the computer with Evernote - it will turn your "paper" documents into digital format that is always so easy to find and manage.

When planning a movie or weekend dinner with friends, you can send all of them a quick reminder for the event via phone and SMS for free using Notifu. If you’re inviting people at home for a party, head-over to sites like VideoJug.com, SuTree or 5min.com for new ideas about food, cocktails, party games, etc.

If you ever need to fax a document somewhere, just go to FaxZero, upload the document and fax it for free. FaxZero is only available for fax numbers of US or Canada but for international numbers, you may try eFax.

You can also consider dropping those magazine subscriptions that are delivered by snail mail - switch to Zinio instead that delivers the same magazine but in digital format.

As far as I remember, you’re currently using an unlimited data plan for the Internet but if that’s not true, get BitMeter - it will help you visually monitor your bandwidth usage so you never exceed the plan limit. You may also want to download FlashGet for downloading big files from the Internet.

If you notice carefully, some websites add an orange colored icon in the browser address bar (go to cnn.com to see a live example) - this icon means that you can get updates about new articles posted on that site automatically without having to visit the site again and again. If that’s the case, go to Feed My Inbox and type the address of that website - you’ll be notified automatically via email.

When browsing the web, you’ll frequently come across photographs, web pages and videos that you’ll want to share with us (your family members) - you could either send the link in a group mail or better still, simply create an account at Tumblr and start saving all the "interesting" stuff there.

And if you ever find yourself spending too much time on the computer, get RescueTime to know about websites where you spend most of your time.

There are a few other things that I want to do on your computer like installing a hosts file and configuring OpenDNS so that sites load quickly on your machine. These however require some geeky knowledge so I will try configuring them from here itself via CrossLoop - a remote desktop access tool.

Sin is self-frustration in man's violation of God's will ;
Human actions and animal functions Distinctions ;

Sin is thus self frustration brought about by man in his violation of the will of God. In sinning against God man sins against his human essence, and brings about his frustration . He degrades himself in that violation to the level of beasts and behaves like a beast. The equation is perhaps a libel on beasts, which, it is hoped, beasts will forgive as they have been doing many other inflictions of man on them. The man who behaves like a beast makes himself a beast and therefore merits the treatment of a beast. He can not lead the life of a beastand expect the treatment of a man. What distinguishes the behaviour of a beast from that of a man is the behaviour of man in accordance with the will of God (sastra) . Such a behaviour, such a conduct, is alone human. According to Vyasa's Brahma Sutra, Divinity is "sastrayonitva" and humanity is "sastrarthavattva". The soul, the "knower", is the knower of the will of God. God, in His mercy, has eternally declared His will and endowed souls with the status of knowers so that they could know His will and behave in accordance with it in order that they might br redeemed from the frustration brought about by themselves in their selfdom. It is in that will and in that endowment that God has distinguished man from beasts. It is therefore up to man, if he is to be reckoned and treated as a man, to behave like a man in accordance with the will of God. Human actions are not mere instinctive animal functions or mechanical physical movements and displacements in space. They are conscious and cordial functions in accordance with the will of God. It is that function and not "reason" as is generally supposed, that distinguishes man from beast. Behaviouristic moralists look to beasts and insects for wisdom. The bee polity, says Prof. Huxley, "fulfils the ideal of the communistic aphorism to each according to his needs, from each according to his capacity. [Evolution and Ethics : Prolegomena] That beasts have no 'reason' is another libel on beasts. There is no 'reason' to justify that libel. The word 'reason' is derived from a Latin root which means to 'reckon'.. That beasts do reckon as much and as well as men is a fact. Men and beasts both reckon and function alike in the field of matter. If the field of matter is exhaustive of the faculty of reckoning, there is no reason to deny reason to animals. They seem to have even more reason in that sense than men. They do not seem to commit the same amount of havoc on their bodies as men do on theirs. They are more law abiding than men. They are blessed with a constitutional immunity from the anarchy of the tongue. Their observance of the laws of Nature is more scrupulous than man's. They are better physicians than we are. Their rapacity and predacity seem to be far less than man's. To call all those "reckonings" as instinct in the case of animals, and "reason" in the case of man seems wholly arbitrary and self-adulatory. The real distinction -- if distinction there is to be -- must be in something which is special to man as man and not comon to him with animals as animals. It is in man's knowledge of a higher will -- the universal will -- and in his endevour to lay his will in line with that will. It is in his 'reckoning' with that will , that man is marked off from animals. Without a Divine universal will there will be nothing for man to reckon with, in the sense of "reasoning" which animals do not have in common with him. Men and beasts both reckon with matter and with themselves. Man's knowledge of himself by himself is not different from the knowledge of beasts of themselves by themselves. That knowledge is not human knowledge, but mere "animal sense" as Suka calls it. [Bhagavata 7.5.12] Men and beasts obey alike the biological law of survival and reproduction. All materialistic attempts at understanding man in terms of that biological law must necessarily result in an understanding of him as but a member of the group or society of animals and not as a being having any status or faculty, which others of the animal group or society do not possess in common with him. Man must first transcend his animality before he can be reckoned as belonging to humanity and he can lay claim to being reckoned as such, only when he awakensto his own nature as the servant of God and of the need of his surrender and service to God. That is man's nature, that is man's need. Until man has reached that stage he has not reached the stage of humanity{ Thirumangai Alvar 11.7.9}. It is in man's knowledge of his essence as the servant of God and in his action in accordance with the will of God that man becomes a man and his actions become human. To deny God or to deny will to God, is to deny humanity. The will of God is as eternal as God Himself. It is that will (sastra) that man has to understand. It is with that will that man has to 'reckon' and it is to that will that man has to submit. man in his defiance of that will forfeits his status of a man and invites the treatment of a beast. Without a Divine will, without a moral law, compelling the obedience of all men, man must be and ever remain one with beasts and the world would then be all one jungle haunted by the most rapacious of human beasts. The Veda declares:- "Thus far (they are all) beasts bipeds and quadrupeds." As a mere specimen in the zoo of evolutionary biology man has not got even the look of antiquity about him. In that zoo man's is a mere blink of the latest mammalian upstart. As such a specimen man's value is only such. man in his transgression of the will of God effects his own frustration.[ Gita XVI 23, 24.]

PADUKA SAHASRAM -- INTRODUCTION BY SRI. KESAVA AYYANGAR (continues)

God's command --cordial persuasion ;
Man's obedience -- willing submission

The nature of God's command and its transformation into the serving will of the soul is beautifully brought out in the Lord's Song. The Lord said to Arjuna :- "Thus have I declared unto thee the Science -- the secret of all secrets. Consider it all well and then do as you please." {Gita XVIII 16} That is the true command, and that is the truth about God's command -- a command in all the sweetness of cordial persuasion. That is the Song Divine. "Thy word I shall do" was the loving response of Arjuna to the persuasion. [Gita XVIII. 73.] The same sentiment has been expressed by Seneca when he says, " I follow Him (God) because my soul wills it and not because I must" [Epistles XCVI] The transformation of the world of God into the will and way of the soul is the essence of Vedantic ethics. It is the very essence of sweetness, the one "sweetness of unanimity" in the words of the present author. {Adhikaranasaravali 530: Cf: Rahasyathrayasara ch 22 & 32} It is the unanimity of the Lord's "foot" (pada) and His "foot-guard" (Paduka). That the fruition of knowledge is service to the "good foot" of the Lord is the declaration of the great moral philosopher Thiruvalluvar. (Kural 1, 2.) The "goodness" of the foot, according to the great commentator -- Parimelalagar, is the goodness of its redemption of man from his frustration in material bondage. That is the Lord's 'narpada' (good foot) of present author's Mummanikkovai.[Mummanikkovai 7 : Cf: Sarasara: Dvayadhikara: as to the "Foot" being the eternal abode of the liberated; As to the "Foot" being the means --upaya-- and the end--upeya Cf: in in particular Rahasyatrayasara ch 28;] It is in the eternal and immediate percipience of that "Foot" of the Lord that souls fulfil themselves. That is moksha (liberation) Moksha is the liberation of the spiritual energy of the soul from the bondage of matter and seldom and it is in that liberation that the soul is restored for ever to ots primal competency of serving the "foot" of God. To become His servant is to become His Paduka and the servant of His Paduka. The liberated can alone worthily worship and serve the "foot" of God; for it is the worship and service of sentience in the infinity of its liberation. If the liberated soul shines in the pristine essence of its luminous sentience, it is radiant in the supernal function of its luminiferous servience. Service is sentience in radiation and it is that service that illuminates and sustains the universe. It is lokasangraha, the true social service. That alone is true service in that it serves the purpose of universal illumination and sustenance. All service is purposive and that purpose is service. Service is the means, service is the end. The purpose of God is being served in the service of souls. Souls in their service obey the will of God and serve the purpose of God. As is God's purpose vever-ending, so is soul's service. It is the purpose of the infinite "foot" of God that is being eternally served in the infinite service of "Paduka". Souls in their service serve and subserve the purpose of God to the greater glory of God. There is no end to God's glory and therefore there is no end to soul's service. Hence the sadadarsana of souls. Service is the one universal gospel and Paduka stands for that gospel. God is the Lord of the liberated.. He is "to be served by the liberated" is the declaration of Vyasa. He is the "muktopasrpya" of his Sutra, and the "mukanam parama gati" of his Sahasranama. {For a full elucidation of the Vedantic truth that service to God is the essential characteristic (lakshana) of liberated souls and that souls in their full and final liberation from the impediment of matter gain their service and thereb gain their essence in eternal service to God. Vide Bhattar Parasara's Bhagavadgunadarpana in the Bhashya for the name "Muktanam parama gati'. Wherein the relevant Upanishads, Brahma Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, Bharata, Vishnu Purana, Vishnu Tattva, etc., are set out and service to God shown as their key thought.} The "Upasarpana" (service) of Vyasa, is the "Padopasarpana" -- service to the foot of the Lord-- of Suka [Bhagavate 7.6.2: It is the "padasevana" in 7.5.23.ibid] Moksha is service in liberty. It is unimpeded service. Matter is the one impediment to service and it is from that impediment that muktas have been for ever liberated by God. The freedom of the liberated is the freedom from matter and in that freedom they are for ever wedded to the "foot" of God so that they may serve that "foot" in all spiritual energy in their freedom from matter and selfdom. That is moksha. It is the absolute liberation of the soul's spiritual energy from the bondage of matter for God's service without any break or lapse. Souls gain and fulfil themselves in that service and that service is bliss.

Paduka Sahasram Intro

Fulfilment of God’s Justice in God’s mercy ;
God’s will; Soul’s will ; Intuition.

That glory, that greater glory, is the gory of the fulfilment of God’s justice in God’s mercy. Mercy has its foundation in justice, and justice its fulfilment in mercy. Justice is the law of frustration, and mercy is the law of fulfilment. Man in his defiance of God, effects his own frustration and in his submission to God, effects his own fulfilment. Justice is the law that frustration and redemption is the law of that fulfilment; for the one is as much the will of God as the other. The one is the will of “Kshipami” (Gita XVI.19) (throw down) and the other is the will of “mokshayishyami” [ Gita XVIII.66] (I shall liberate), of the Lord’s Song. All sin is the sin of frustration and all virtue is the virtue of fulfilment. Man effects his frustration in transgressing the will of God, and effects his fulfilment in surrendering to the will of God. In His surrender he renders unto God what is God’s own – his very soul, and it is in that rendering that he gains himself. That is his fulfilment – the fulfilment of being owned and affiliated for ever by God as God’s own. That fulfilment is the one achievement of man, and it is achieved in his placing for ever his will in line with God’s, so that His will and his way become one. In that submission God’s will becomes one. In that submission God’s will becomes the soul’s volition and resolve. It is the very fulfilment of God’s command in the servant’s will, in the abundance of the servant’s love f God, and faith in God. The servant becomes thenceforward free to will and move, for it is the will and movement of serving percipience in the infinity of love and faith. It is intuition in beatitude. That intuition is the transformation of God’s will into His servants. It is not a substitution which brought about his frustration from which he had to be redeemed and was redeemed in his submission to the will of God. All good and true intuition is the intuition in and into the will of God and of God alone so as to be integrated in it for ever in infinite beatitude. #
#[It is pratyagatmadarsana, and sadadarsana. God’s command (sastras, chodana agna in Karmabhaga becomes transformed into the will (sankalpa) of the liberated soul in Brahmabhaga. That will is the soul’s will to serve God. It is the fulfilment of God’s will in the will of His liberated servants. Karma is the ‘earlier’ part (purvabhaga) and gnana is the ‘ later ‘ part (uttara bhaga or uparitanabhaga) of one and the same science of Mimamsa. Karma and gnana are neither exclusive nor contradictory. To adopt the language of the present author in Adhikaranasaravali, verse 10, karma is no more gnana in truncation than gnana is karma in decapitation. According to Vyasa {Cf: Devadadhikarana} ‘sruti’ is perception (pratyaksha) and ‘smruti’ is inference(anumana) The soul sees with the eye of God and wills with the will of God. That is the soul’s satyasankalpa (true volition) and that satya is the satya of the soul’s serving percipience and experience. Intuition , which, as its etymology implies, roughly corresponds to pratiyagatmadarsana, is the realisation in eternal immediacy of the truth of that “perception” in the soul’s sadadarsana, and upasarpana. That is vedantic truth as would appear from the various sutras of Vyasa and particularly those in Kartradhikarana. Avrttiyadhikarana, Ikshatyadhikarana, Ikshatikarmadhikarana, Dyubhavadyadhikarana,Sankalpadhikarana, and Jagatvyaparavarjadhikarana. The synthetical gist of the relevant sutras in the adhikarana is that the command (sastra) in Karmadhikarana, by dint of the soul’s undaunted endeavour in faith and love in Avrttiyadhikarana, is transformed into the soul’s will(sankalpa) in Sankalpadhikarana and the eternal percipience (sadadarsana) in Ikshatikarmadhikarana, and service (upasarpana) in Dyubhavadyadhikarana, and non-reverter in Jagadvyaparavarjadhi karana. That serving percipience has its beginning in avrtti and its fulfilment in anvrtti. Similarly according to Vyasa, whose articulation is Vedanta, God is gneya (to be known), soul is gna (knower) and matter is heya (to be cast off) Cf: Anumanikadhikarana, Gnadhikarana, andIkshdyadhikarana, where God, soul, and Matter are declared to be Gneya, Gna and Heya respectively . The Gneya(to be known) of Anumanikadhikarana is the Muktopasrpya (to be served by the liberated) of Dyubhavadyadhikarana. Vyasa Sutra may be equated thus : Matter: Soul: God: Hey (to be cast off): Gna (knower): Gneya (to be known): and uktopasrpya (to be served by the liberated).]

PodMail – The best way to send and receive large files by email - instant fundas

How do you deal with the email attachment size limitation when you need to send a large file to someone? You use some file sharing service like Rapidshare or Yousendit, obviously. But if that someone is not too conversant with the web, he or she might not be able to figure out how to download that file from such a sharing service. These people are only used to clicking on the attachment link and the file magically gets downloaded to their PCs.

PodMail is an application that allows you to send and receive files of unlimited size via email. The integration of this service with email is seamless – the recipient can download the file right from their browser as if the file actually came attached with the mail.

The Podmailing Network uses two kinds of method to deliver the file to the recipient - via Peer-To-Peer and via centralized servers. In the Peer-To-Peer method, data moves directly between the PCs of the sender and the recipients. In the centralized method, data is delivered from their server where the files remains for up to 30 days.

To send files you compose a “podmail” the same you compose an email in your email client. Select the files or folders you want to attach and send the podmail. The composed message gets delivered to the recipient's inbox and the attached file gets transferred to PodMail’s servers. Not only you get to send large files, you also prevent the recipient’s inbox from getting clogged since all the attachments are stored in PodMail’s servers and not on their mail box.

podmail_type_message

podmail_uploading

The recipient will receive a mail such as the one shown below.

podmail-mail-receive

He can now download the file either directly from the browser, or through a torrent client or using the PodMail application. PodMail also supports resume, so you can download very large attachment in parts without having to download it all at once.

I have seen many file sharing application in the past but PodMail blows them all. It’s the best solution I have seen so far. It’s easy, it’s simple and it’s free.

Sri Paduka sahasram intro

JUSTICE AND MERCY

what then about justice, which is called retribution? To give men their due is justice and justice is all their due. What do they deserve? “Use every man after his desert and who should escape whipping?” Well, the conviction is all right, but the sentence seems so ridiculous as to make the conviction itself a travesty. That is man’s plight and it is a plight in which he has landed himself. Only he does not like that truth about him to be told. Man is revelling in deception and the worst of all deceptions is self-deception. In that self-deception he has been committing self-stealth. It is from that he has to be redeemed , and it is of that he has to be acquitted. No earthly tribunal can or will redeem or acquit an offender; for it is all a tribunal of mere requital. Man can not be redeemed and acquitted in justice. Justice is impartial. It is the impartiality of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Justice is vindictive. It vindicates itself by committing on the offender the very offence for which he is condemned. Can that be true justice? Is to do justice, merely ‘retribuere’? Are not the so called tribunals of justice, municipal as well as international, committing the very thing they profess to punish? Would not the meting out of such a justice reduce those tribunals to mere bumbledoms? It is in the answer to those questions that one discerns the glimpses of the foundations of human hope and faith. The answer is to be found in God’s mercy. That man has survived judgment – perhaps in that judgment because it is God’s and not man’s ( of which more later) – is the most compelling proof of God being soaked through and through in eternal and infinite mercy. The conception of justice as ‘retribution’ pure and simple is wholly inadequate, if not misleading. What man deserves is not judgment, for he has already had it in the very commission of the offence. The commission carries with it its own judgment. “The first and worst penalty for sin” says Seneca, ‘is to have committed sin….; the punish ment of crime lies in the crime itself” { Epistles XCVII} It is God-ordained and is automatic on the commission. What man needs therefore is not judgment, for he has already had it in the commission of the offence, but only a redemption from it. It is a treatment for the malady and not a condemnation for it by the infliction of another malady that he stands in need of. Man’s need is surgery and not butchery. He may not be alive to his need but God is. The need arises from the judgment and the judgment is God’s. All justice is the justice of reaction and all mercy is the mercy of redemption, and both are God’s. God is just to all in His mercy and merciful to all in His justice. The merci ful God has been mindful of the sinner and it is in that remembrance that the sinner has been surviving. God is biding His time for treatment. The surgeon’s function is not to judge, to treat the patient. The surgeon is not there to condemn the patient to the disease contracted by him, however much the patient might have sinned against the laws of Nature in contracting it, or to inject another disease into him in vindication of the laws of Nature which the patient has violated, but to redeem him out of it and to restore him to his primal health. The very need for the surgeon is in the fact of the violation of the laws of Nature and in the consequent contraction of the disease by the patient. The more the malady the more the need for him. God, the free surgeon of humanity, the ‘one’ surgeon of mercy, in His essential cleanliness and kindliness, treats the patient sinner, redeems him from his sins, and restores him to his primal health of sentient service. Man, in that treatment, becomes so sterilised with His cleanliness as to become proof against sin, and so healed with His kindliness as to attain to the fullness of his sentient status without any possibility of ever lapsing from it. The “two fold attribute” of God – ubhayalinga as it is called by Vyasa, – cleanliness and kindliness is suggestive of the metaphor of the surgeon as well as of the sovereign. To the author Mercy is herself the surgeon and her sister “attributes” of God are attendant nurses. [DAYASATAKA :34,67,71, 101. Cf; Perialwar 5.3.6; Kulasekhara alvar5.4] God’s omnipotence omniscience and all the rest are truly the “sisters” of Mercy. God’s “foot” is that mercy and Paduka is that mercy in extension. It is the extension of the “foot” of God from the Empyrean Heaven of Heavens to the bowing head of the penitent sinner. It is in that extension that man is redeemed and affiliated to the redeeming “foot” in everlasting service. That extension stands for the discent of God as well as for the accent of man. {Paduka 61, 100, 266, 267,et passim} If God’s “foot” is His Glory, His Paduka is His greater glory; for it is His own “foot” in extension. It is to that greater glory of God that the author sang these thousand songs and himself became the extension of the Paduka he sang – the servant of God’s servants [Paduka 998,1001,1005]

http://translate.google.com/translate_t#
அது போலத்தான் யாகூவின் பாபேல்பிஷ் சேவையும்.
http://babelfish.yahoo.com/

Paduka Sahasram intro by Sri Keasava Iyengar

Paduka integrates

It is the Lord's Paduka that brings the liberating God and the liberated souls together. It is at once the "foot guard" and the "head guard" of souls. In the words of the present author. [Paduka 61] It is the togetherness of God in His saving grace and souls in their serving love. Paduka's is the function of integrating the serving personality of souls in the saving personality of God. Its own personality being a serving one in relation to God, and a saving one in relation to souls. [Paduka : 28, 61, 109] That is how it saves both. It saves God as God and souls as souls. It is a true guard and a guard of truth in that it guards against atheism, pantheism and acosmism. In the effectuation of that togetherness Paduka reveals itself as the very extension of God's "foot" -- the foot extended in mercy. It is in that extension that God's 'foot ' becomes accessible to the serving soul. God so extends it only to those who serve Him and His servants. That service is the reason of the extension. Hence the equation of the Divine Poet -- Valmiki, that Paduka is verily the foot (Pada) of the Lord -- the foot extended in mercy. In those eternally hallowed words did the Poet extend the mercy of God into infinity and in that extension made the Paduka excel the very "foot" whose extension it is; for it is the extension of that mercy of that very "foot". The Imponderable, the ultimate, the inaccessible, --God --, In His access to man excels Himself in His own mercy and in that excellence reveals his own mercy (foot) as the very content of the soul's serving love (Paduka). Such is the nature and glory of God's mercy. Any restraint on God's mercy is a restraint on Divinity. Sinners condemned to judgement are redeemed in mercy. That is the glory of God's mercy . The purpose of the extension is the redemption of man by God and the service of man to God. As service pleases God it pleases God to make him His servant. It is in His pleasure that man is called to the service of God. Unless and until God is pleased and calls man to His service man cannot become the servant of God. Until then man remains the servant of Mammon and of Mammon's servants. Just as God is pleased not only with man's service to Himself but with his service to His own servants, so also is Mammon pleased with the service of man not only to himself but also to his own servants. Hence the appalling prodigiousness of man-worship ! Man is essentially a servant and not a master. Every man hankers after and angles for service. While he is revelling in servility he is stimulating regality ! Man is and remains for ever a servant. Service is the destiny of man. The question is only a choice of masters. He cannot serve both God and Mammon. He must choose between the two . The choice is his and he is responsible for his choice. That responsibility is implicit in his sentience. Serving sentience is the essence of human soul and that service is to God and to His servants. { Nyayasiddhanjana II : Sathakopa Thiruvoimozhi 3, 7. 9, & 10, 8, 8 , 2, & 1:} In his choice of Mammon's service man sins against his very essence and stands by that choice condemned by judgement. That judgement must be suffered until it is upset by the tribunal of God's Mercy. If justice is the tribunal which gives each man his due, Mercy is the tribunal which forgives it. Mercy is the 'sacrifice' of God and it is in that sacrifice that He becomes not merely accessible to man but equates Himself with him. Redemption of man is the greatest "sacrifice" of God and that sacrifice is His mercy. To 'fly' to the succour of the penitent sinner because of the sins he repents, to redeem him for that repentance and to own him for ever as His own to such an extent as to let Himself be owned by him in all His grace is the very crown of all sacrifice which the all-merciful God alone is capable of. [ Dayasataka 60, 63, 65, 70] That sacrifice, that mercy, is the very "attribute" of Divinity.

"justice and Mercy" follows .....

Constitutional Function Organic and integral immanence of God and solidarity of man

The process of the constitution being ethical, its function is organic and integral; for it is a function in selflessness. The 'One' in all and the 'all' in One, each in its love of the other, function as One-all, so that the One in its primacy becomes equated with the 'all' in parity as one in all. That primacy implies omnipresence and that omnipresence is immanence. The primus, the soverign, has no particular location. He is present everywhere in his realm. The realm is constituted and sustained in that immanence. The Immanence of the primus is no more thelogical dogma. That the realm is politically constituted in regal omnipresence is a basic constitutional principle and that principle has been affirmed by the Judicial Committee in Hull's case.[ 1926 Irish Reports, Page 402 at 404 perViscount Haldane] The immanence of sustaining God and the solidarity of the serving universe is the principle of that constitution. Because the primus is immanent, therefore the universe is in solidium. The solidarity of the creatures is founded in the immanence of the Creator. That is the truth of the "oneness" of the Creator and His creatures. "He fulfils desires as one of the many" is the ethical process of universal sustenance. That is the true cosmic process. So also with the spiritual process in liberation. "The liberated soul enjoys all the goodness with the All good God." It is the immortal life of "togetherness" that the liberated souls are blessed with, and it is that life that they live in eternal attitude.

Paduka sahasra intro (Sri Kesava Iyengar)

Constitutional Process Ethical Love and Sacrifice

The “foot” of God is not merely the constating principle but is the guiding factor of the universe. The universe moves in response to and in unison with its will. That response is love and that unison is sacrifice. Purity is implicit in sacrifice and that purity is the purity of selflessness. We are pure only when we submit and surrender ourselves to the “foot” of God. The soul corroded by cravings and grabbings, and poisoned by greed and hate, has first to be sterilised. It must first shake itself off from the septic rags in which it has wrapped itself up and to which it has been infatuosly clinging for aeons of ages. That shaking off will become possible only when it awakens to its prestine purity the purity of selfless sentience and servience. When it awakens to it, it forthwith “falls” at the foot of God, its only refuge. It is in that ‘fall’, in that supplication, when it dedicates itself absolutely and for ever to the service of that “foot” that it becomes pure,. Submission and service is the fundamental law of that constitution. It is intolerant of any aggression or depredation. Pugnacity and predacity are repugnant to the constitution of the universe. The process of that constitution is ethical and all ethics is the etics of sacrifice. Sacrifice is voluntary and cheerful. What is not voluntarily and cheerfully rendered unto the “foot” of God is not sacrifice. What is rendered for or in the hope of reward for the self is neither rendering nor sacrifice. Sacrifice is neeither suffered nor rewarded. It is as incapable of the one as intolerant of the other. If suffered it is not sacrifice, but merely the pangs of selfishness; if rewarded it ceases to be sacrifice. The good do not suffer in sacrifice in the sense in which the word ‘suffer’ is usually understood. They effect sacrifice in all their strength and experience it in all their cheer. Sacrifice is the achievement of heavenly heroes and it is achieved in love and love alone. If the mother ‘suffers’ in child birth it is a joyful expeience to her ‘suffered’ in all the strength of her love. The momentary physical pain adds to the life-long joy of motherhood. That joy begins in that pain. The cry of the new-born babe, though it is a cry, is the very cry of life and joy. If there is no cry there is no life in it. If it does not cry the mother does and hers is the cry of grief. The apparent sufferings of saintly souls are the “sufferings” of cheer in all the strength of their love and faith and are therefore cheerful to them. If they are grieved they are not saints. All grief is the grief of selfishness and all joy is the joy of selflessness. Saints and sinners both react to what befall them. While the reactions of the former are the reactions of knowledge and of faith and fortitude, those of the latter are the reactions of ignorance and of grief and despair. The latter suffer more from their own reactions to the ‘afflictions’ than from the afflictions themselves. Their reactions are their worst afflictions. Prahlada is the standing example of sacrifice. Far from suffering from the untold ills inflicted on him by those who in their ignorance and hate regarded him as their enemy he regarded them in his knowledge and love as his compeers in God’s creation, and therefore in all his love for them prayed to God to restore them to life and sense. That prayer was heard and granted. He “enjoyed” those inflictions and that was the ‘joy’ of his fellowship with them in God’s creation. That is the saint’s reaction. Sacrifice is inspired and it is the worship of God that inspires it. It is not a suffering but an achievement and a triumph. The more the struggle the more the triumph, for it is a struggle in faith and fortitude. The value of the achievement is measured by the intensity of the struggle. No struggle no value. What is got for nothing is worth nothing.

God, Religion Philosophy, God's "foot" constitutes and causes

God is the one ultimate reality. That is philosophy. That is Religion. The conflict between Philosophy and Religion is a medieval fable. Its survival today is wholly an anachronism. Philosophy and Religion is not a fit. Philosophy and religion are pits and fits only to those who divorce the one from the other. God is the one ultimate Reality. All those that are, are there as manifested in it (the ultimate Reality), sustained by it, and absorbed into it. That manifesting, sustaining and absorbing 'plane' or 'form' of Divinity is, and is regarded as its "foot". That is the causal it accedes to the contemplation of the sentient soul. Hence the vedantic injunction of the contemplation of the 'cause'. It (the ultimate) accedes in its infinite mercy. The stability of the "foot" is the stability of the universe. To cause is not to drive the effect out. Such a causation Vedanta rules out. The concept of God's "foot" is not an anthropomorphic trick of the superstitious mind. It is a basic universal truth. That truth is that the universe is the base of God, and that He bases, and measures with His "foot". It is the "foot" of the all merciful Lord Trivikrama that measured the universe, and the Lord's "foot" which measured was of such imponderable magnitude in its transcendent infinity, that the universe, otherwise immeasurable, became measured by that "foot" and in that measurement dwindled into a speck which had a mere location without any magnitude in that "foot" (1) That is the mystery and the truth of that "foot" - the foot in and by which the universe is held, measured and ruled. Man is no more the measure of things than brute beasts, stocks and stones. It is God's "foot" that measures and rules the universe. (2) That "foot-measure" and "foot-rule" is universal. God's "foot" causes, measures and rules. It is the basic essence of Divinity. The Divinity is the sustainer of the universe, and it sustains itself on its own "foot" "God is based in His own magnificence" That base is His "foot" (3) It is the magnificent base in which He and His are integrated and that integration is the magnificence of the base. It is the integration of His - the all, in Him - the One. The "foot" is the metaphysic of God's immanence in which is implicit His transcendence. The law of the universe is the law of the integration of the all in the One. The truth about that law is that the 'all' is the 'all' of differences, that all differences are true, and that they are all truly the differences of compliments. What is true as to the differences of the nature is equally true as to the differences of the function. The very differences of the all befit their integration in the One. The more the differences the more the integration. The all find their fulfilment, all alike, in their union with the Divine basic essence -- the "foot of God. The differences of the universe constitutes the richness of the "foot". They are all its and therefore constitutes its wealth. The universe is constituted as its wealth, and it as its all-pervading sustainer. As the all are constituted in the One as its own (which is the value of "all" and which is their only true and ultimate value) the all are constituted alike in that value so as to constitute the all into one whole. It is a true commonwealth of all. It is alike in relation to the One, and common in relation to the all. The One is no more outside of the all than the all is outside of the One. The constituting One and the constituted all is all one constitution, and it is in that constitution that the universe functions. The "One" being equated with the 'all' in the integration, the knowledge of the "One" is equated with the knowledge of the all for it is all the knowledge of that one integration. In the language of metaphysics it is the knowledge of the one universal cause. That knowledge is bliss. It is the one universal knowledge. "Felix qui potui rerum cognoscre causes, Atque metus omnes et inexorabile fatum. Subject pedibus strepitumque Acherontis ovari" "Happy is he who can know the causes of things and who subdues with his feet all fears the inexorable fate, and the roar of greedy Acheron" (4) In those words has that great poet of the West, Virgil, sounded this universal truth of causal knowledge and of the fruition in immortal freedom from selfdom.

Paduka sahasram intro

ஆத்தூர் ஸ்வாமியின் பாதுகா சகஸ்ர தமிழ் மொழிபெயர்ப்புக்கு

Paduka a concept and a truth

Paduka is at once a concept and a truth, mystic and real. Service to God and to God’s servants is that concept and truth. Paduka’s in its supremacy as the “Foot-guard” of the Lord, is an integral personality. That personality is at once individual and social. In its individual personality it is the servant of the Lord, and the very primate of all His servants. In its social personality it is the servant of the Lord’s servants in their service to the Lord and they all together form a society of servants in mutual fellowship. In that fellowship every servant becomes equated with Paduka, and therefore with each other in mutual service. It is the glory of the service of Paduka in individual primacy and social parity that is sung in this poem.

Theme of the Poem

The poem is a theme on good life, and stands for every thing that is good in life. Good life is a life that makes life worth living. It is a life of humanity integrated in Divinity. It is a life of immortality in service. It is life abundant and it is abundant as much here as in the hereafter. A life of bestiality is one which is abandoned to matter and dead to all humanity and those who live that life die abestial death accursed in it.” A life of humanity is one whhich is dead to bestiality and those who live that life live a blissful life. it is a life in which the head of humanity is wedded to the “foot” of Divinity. It is an indissoluble wedding, everlasting and ever blessed. With the beginning of that wedding begins the never-ending service of man. Man serves to please God. God is pleased with man’s service. He is so pleased with the service that in His pleasure He regards the serving man as His very compeer, comrade and friend, nay as His very self. That pleasure is His grace and in that grace He equates His servants with His very self. That is grace and that grace is Divine. man is restored in service to his prima blessedness by the grace of God. Paduka is that service and it stands as much for that service as for the law of that service. It is eternally sounding that law in the serene and immutable majesty of its march in unison with the “foot” which it bears and reveals in that march. Its very march is law. The will of God is the way of Paduka. Paduka serves as He wills, and He wills as it serves. God is the infinity of ‘saving’ grace and Paduka is the infinity of ‘serving’ love. The servant, though finite in essence, is infinite in service, and that is service infinity.

PADUKA SAHASRA

ஸ்ரீ பாதுகா சஹஸ்ரத்துக்கு ஸ்ரீ கேசவ அய்யங்கார் எழுதியுள்ள முன்னுரை

PADUKA SAHASRA
        OR
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF SERVICE

   Paduka Sahasra by Vedanta Desika

Sri  Padukasahasra is a poem in Sanskrit of one thousand and eight verses sung by the Poet-Philosopher Vedanta Desika in glorification of Lord Ranganatha’s Paduka. ‘Paduka’ means “Foot Guard”. It is the Sandal of the Lord and it is so called because it “guards” the Lord’s Foot. The very name of the author, Vedanta Desika (Teacher of Vedanta), is an inspiration, and ensures the value of the work. He is the Teacher of Vedanta, the ‘two-fold’ Vedanta (Ubhaya Vedanta) as it is called, the sanskrit and the Tamil. While the essence of both Vedantas is service to God and to His servants, the emphasis of the former is on service to ‘God’ and that of the latter is on service to God’s servants. The author stands for and is the very embodiment of that service. The teacher was what he taught. He was in himself the very two-fold vedanta which he taught, the very synthesis of service to God and to His servants. He reveals himself in that synthesis in the very approach to the subject. He approaches it with a humility which is matched only by the sublimity of the subject. The personality of the author is best revealed in the work. He was crowned with the Lord’s Paduka in His sanctuary and it was in glorification of the Paduka wiith which he was crowned that the poem was sung in the abundance of his abiding humility and gratitude. He  considered that the poem was inspired by Paduka, that it is the very voice of Paduka in his Persona (mask), and that he served the purpose of masking the Paduka which sang its supremacy as the crown of man’s head and as the guard of God’s foot. The work is the expression of that ecstatic realisation. Verily it is: – “ O Lord! open Thou my lips and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise”
